Teaching Phonics & Sight Words
What it is
Most words can be sounded out. A few, called heart words, hold one part that has to be learned by heart: said, was, what, they. The work is telling the two kinds apart, reading heart words quickly beside words that are sounded out, and noticing exactly which letters are the tricky part.
When a child is ready
Use it once short-vowel words are read steadily and the child is meeting common words in real reading.
If they struggle
Do not have the child memorize a heart word whole when most of it behaves. Underline the part that sounds out and circle the part to remember (in said, the ai is the surprise), then have the child write the word from memory and check it. A few words a day beats a long list once a week.
