Teaching Phonics & Sight Words

What it is

This set holds the two halves of word study side by side: pattern words traced and written on lines (blind, blast, bled, blue), and common words practiced from a list or hunted in a puzzle — some, know, put in first grade; father, once, because, beautiful by third. Most so-called sight words are only partly irregular, with one or two letters as the surprise.

When a child is ready

Use it once short-vowel words are read steadily and the child is meeting common words in real reading.

If they struggle

Do not memorize a word whole when part of it behaves. Underline the regular part (th-ank, s-ome, p-ut) and circle the part that must be remembered, then have the child write it from memory and check it against the card. A few words daily beats a long list once a week.
