Teaching Beginning, Middle, and Ending Sounds
What it is
Before a child can spell a word, the ear has to find its sounds: the first, the last, and then the hardest, the vowel in the middle. The grown-up says the picture names; the child circles the picture that shares a sound, circles the letter for a sound, or sorts picture cards by their first or last sound.
When a child is ready
Begin once most letter sounds are known and the child can say a word slowly enough to hear its parts.
If they struggle
Ending sounds are harder than beginning sounds, and the middle vowel is hardest of all. Say the word, then say it again holding the last sound long. For the middle, tap three fingers as you say the word and ask only about the middle finger.
