Teaching Phonemic Awareness

What it is

Phonemic awareness is hearing and working with the individual sounds in spoken words: knowing that cat has three sounds, or that changing the first sound of cat makes hat.

When a child is ready

It comes before and alongside letter sounds; a child who can rhyme and clap syllables is ready to isolate first sounds.

If they struggle

Keep it oral. Say a word slowly, stretch the sounds, and have the child count them on fingers. Practice first sounds, then last sounds, then middle sounds, a few minutes a day.
