Teaching Phonics & Sight Words
What it is
By Grade 3 the words to learn by heart are longer: question, answer, people, enough, through. Each still sounds out in most of its letters, with one part that does not. The child maps the word sound by sound, marks the tricky part, reads it three times, spells it, and uses it in a sentence.
When a child is ready
Use it once the regular spelling patterns of Grades 1 and 2 are read without effort, so the irregular part stands out.
If they struggle
Do not have the child memorize the word whole when most of it behaves. Underline the regular part and circle the part that must be remembered (the w in answer, the ough in enough), then have the child write it from memory and check it against the card. A few words daily beats a long list once a week.
