Teaching Silent Letters: kn
What it is
In the kn spelling, the k is silent and only the n is heard: knee, knot, knife, know.
When a child is ready
Teach silent letters once the child reads blends and digraphs confidently and no longer sounds out every letter.
If they struggle
The child will try to say /k/. Explain that kn is an old spelling from when the k was pronounced; the k is a clue to meaning, not to sound. Read the small kn word family as a group.
