Teaching Silent Letters: mb
What it is
In the mb spelling, the b at the end of a word is silent: lamb, comb, thumb, climb, crumb, numb. In words like number, amber, and timber the same two letters are both heard, so where the mb sits is what matters.
When a child is ready
Teach it once blends and digraphs are read without sounding out each letter and the child accepts that some letters are written but not said.
If they struggle
Position is the clue: the b is silent when mb ends the word or syllable (lamb, climbing), and spoken when a vowel follows it (number, timber, bamboo). Have the child underline the ending before reading, and keep a running silent-b list to add to as new words come up.
