Teaching Rhyming & Word Families
What it is
A word family is a group of words that share an ending: cat, hat, mat, sat. Reading by family shows a child that changing one letter changes the word.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child knows the short vowels and can hear rhymes.
If they struggle
Build the words with letter tiles, swapping only the first letter. If the child guesses, cover the onset and read the family part first, then add the new first sound.
