Teaching Missing & Hidden Letters
What it is
The gaps in Grade 4 are the spellings that cannot be heard: ch saying /k/ in chorus and chemistry, the endings -cious and -tious in precious and cautious, -tion, -sion and -cian in location, explosion and electrician, and silent letters in hymn and doubt. A sentence gives the clue and a small bank lists the choices.
When a child is ready
Ready once each of these spellings has been taught on its own and the child reads the words without help.
If they struggle
Sound alone will not settle these, so lean on meaning and word family. A person's job takes -cian (electric, electrician); an action usually takes -tion or -sion. Have the child write the word both ways and compare it with a relative they already spell.
