Teaching Spelling Lists

What it is

These are weekly lists grouped by one pattern each: the ai words one week, the aw words another, and further on, lists built on a single prefix or suffix. Every word on a list is there because it shares a spelling, so the list teaches a pattern rather than a random handful of words.

When a child is ready

A child is ready for a list once the pattern behind it can already be read; spelling a pattern comes after reading it, not before.

If they struggle

If the end-of-week test keeps going badly, shorten the list and study by sound: say the word, count the sounds, write the pattern chunk first, then the rest of the word. Testing two or three words on Tuesday and Thursday finds the errors while there is still time to fix them.
