Teaching Word Building & Unscramble
What it is
Longer words are built from parts. The child is given a word's parts out of order, writes one part in each box in the right order (prefix, root, suffix), and then writes the whole word. Each part's meaning is shown, so the built word can be explained from its pieces as well as spelled.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child knows the week's root and the common prefixes and suffixes that join it.
If they struggle
When the parts are joined in the wrong order, ask which part carries the main meaning; that is the root, and the others attach before or after it. If a letter changes or drops at the join, write the parts and the finished word one above the other and mark what happened.
