Teaching Word Building & Unscramble
What it is
Two jobs sit in this set: unscrambling jumbled letters into a real word, and building or taking apart words from their pieces, as in un plus help plus ful. Both make the child handle the parts of a word instead of reading it at a glance.
When a child is ready
Unscrambling works once the child can hold a word in mind while trying different letter orders; building from parts works once prefixes and suffixes are being taught.
If they struggle
When a scramble stalls, have the child pick a likely beginning out of the loose letters, a blend or a digraph, write it down, and work with what is left over. On build-and-break pages, cover the prefix and the suffix with two fingers and read the base word first, so the pieces are being added to something already known.
