Teaching Word Building & Unscramble
What it is
Longer words are built from parts. The child is given a word's parts out of order (est and low, for example), writes one part in each box in the right order, and then writes the whole word: low + est = lowest. Each part's meaning is shown, so the built word can be explained as well as spelled.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child reads the base words alone and has been taught the ending or prefix being added.
If they struggle
When the parts are joined in the wrong order, ask which part can stand alone as a word; that is the base, and the others attach to it. Have the child say what each part means before writing. If the spelling changes at the join, as in big + est = biggest, point it out and practice that word again.
