Teaching Silent Letters kn and wr
What it is
In kn and wr the first letter is silent: knee, knife and kneel begin with the n sound; wrist, wrap and wrong begin with the r sound. The silent letter is a spelling to remember, not a sound to say.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads words with blends and digraphs, so a two-letter beginning is already familiar.
If they struggle
If the child tries to voice the k or the w, cross it out lightly in pencil and read what is left. Spelling is the harder half: keep a short list of kn words and wr words in view, and practice the ones with a sound-alike that has no silent letter, such as knot and not, write and right.
