Teaching Bossy R: ir and ur
What it is
ir and ur are two spellings of the same r-controlled sound /er/: bird, girl, turn, hurt. The third spelling, er, is in her and fern.
When a child is ready
Teach ir and ur after ar and or, once the child reads the vowel-plus-r as one unit.
If they struggle
Since ir, ur, and er sound alike, spelling is the hard part. Keep a short list of common words for each spelling, and let the child check a word against the list instead of guessing.
