Teaching Syllable Types and Dividing Words
What it is
Two syllable types explain most vowel sounds. A closed syllable ends in a consonant and its vowel is short: up-set, in-sects, plas-tic. An open syllable ends in the vowel and the vowel is long: la-dy, mu-sic, ba-by.
When a child is ready
Teach it when the child reads one-syllable words with short and long vowels and starts meeting longer words.
If they struggle
When a long word comes out wrong, the vowel was usually given the wrong sound. Have the child split the word, cover everything but the first syllable, and ask one question: does a consonant close it in? If the first try is not a real word, try the other vowel sound.
