Teaching Schwa: the Unstressed Vowel
What it is
Schwa is the quick, relaxed 'uh' a vowel makes in a syllable that is not stressed: the a in afraid, along and balloon, the e in planet and problem. Any vowel letter can spell it, which is why these words are easy to read and hard to spell.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads two-syllable words and can clap the syllables, since schwa only lives in the weaker one.
If they struggle
For reading, try the vowel's usual sound first and then relax it until a real word appears. For spelling, say the word the way it is written, stressing every syllable on purpose, so the hidden vowel can be heard and remembered.
