Teaching The OO Sound
What it is
The team oo has two everyday sounds: the long one in moon, room, spoon, and food, and the shorter one in book, foot, good, and stood. A few oo words go a third way, as in door and floor.
When a child is ready
Teach it after the long vowel teams, since oo is usually the first team a child meets that carries two common sounds.
If they struggle
No rule sorts the two, so build a moon list and a book list and read each as a family. When a new oo word turns up, have the child try the moon sound first and the book sound second, keeping whichever makes a real word.
