Teaching The -le Ending
What it is
In words like little, table, handle, giggle, and single, the final -le takes the consonant in front of it and makes the last syllable: lit-tle, ta-ble, han-dle. There is no vowel sound to hear in it; the l carries the syllable by itself.
When a child is ready
Teach it when the child is reading two-syllable words and can split a word between two consonants.
If they struggle
Have the child cover the last three letters, read the front of the word, then read the chunk alone (dle, ble, gle) and put the two together. Clapping the syllables first tells the child to expect two parts, which stops the common guess of reading table as tab.
