Teaching Soft G and -dge
What it is
G is soft, saying /j/, before e, i or y: gem, germ, age, cage, huge. At the end of a short-vowel word the same sound is spelled dge: bridge, edge, badge, judge. After a long vowel or a consonant it is plain ge: stage, charge.
When a child is ready
Teach it alongside soft c, since the same three letters (e, i and y) do the softening.
If they struggle
The usual mistake is reading every g hard. Have the child look at the letter after g before saying the word. For spelling, ask whether the vowel is short: a short vowel takes dge (badge, fudge) and anything else takes ge (cage, huge).
