Teaching Vowel Teams & Diphthongs
What it is
Vowel teams spell one vowel sound with two letters (ai, ee, oa); diphthongs are gliding sounds where the mouth moves during the vowel (oi in coin, ou in cloud, ow in cow).
When a child is ready
Teach diphthongs after the long-vowel teams are secure.
If they struggle
Say the sound slowly and let the child feel the mouth move. Sort words by team and read each team as a family before mixing them.
