Teaching Short a
What it is
Short a is the /a/ sound heard in cat, map, and hand. It is usually the first vowel sound taught because so many early words use it.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can say the sound for most consonants and can hear the first sound in a spoken word.
If they struggle
If the child says /e/ or /u/ instead, anchor the sound to one keyword and picture (a for apple), say it with an open mouth, and read only short-a words for a few days before mixing vowels.
