Teaching Short U

What it is

Short u is the /u/ sound heard in cup, sun, and bug, usually the last short vowel taught.

When a child is ready

Teach it when the other four short vowels are read accurately in simple words.

If they struggle

Short u is often confused with short o. Contrast pairs such as cot/cut and hog/hug, and let the child feel the difference: the jaw drops more for /o/ than for /u/.
