Teaching Short I

What it is

Short i is the /i/ sound heard in sit, pig, and fish.

When a child is ready

Introduce it after short a, once the child blends three-sound words steadily.

If they struggle

If short i and short e blur together, practice minimal pairs (pin/pen, bit/bet, tin/ten) and have the child say the word while pointing to the vowel. Keep sessions short and daily rather than long and occasional.
