Teaching Short O
What it is
Short o is the /o/ sound heard in hot, box, and frog.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child blends CVC words with a and i and can hear the middle sound in a spoken word.
If they struggle
Children sometimes read short o as short u (hot as hut). Use a keyword picture (o for octopus), exaggerate the round mouth shape, and read a short-o word list before mixed practice.
