Teaching Short E

What it is

Short e is the /e/ sound heard in bed, ten, and nest. It is the short vowel children most often confuse with short i.

When a child is ready

Teach it after short a is secure and before mixing several vowels in one lesson.

If they struggle

If bed comes out as bid, compare the two sounds side by side with a mirror: the mouth opens wider for /e/. Sort word cards into an e pile and an i pile before reading them.
