Teaching Letter Recognition
What it is
Letter recognition is naming uppercase and lowercase letters quickly and telling similar letters apart (b and d, p and q, n and u). In Kindergarten every letter has two pages: a big letter to trace beside its keyword picture, and a letter-sound page where the child picks the pictures that begin with the sound and finds the letter among others.
When a child is ready
Most children begin with the letters in their own name and the letters they see most often.
If they struggle
Teach a few letters at a time, with the letter's sound and a keyword. For reversals, use a consistent motor cue (the bat comes before the ball in b) and plenty of tracing, not just flash cards.
