Teaching Lowercase Letters
What it is
Lowercase letters are the small forms nearly all printed text is made of, so they earn as much practice as the capitals. Unlike capitals they differ in height: some are tall, some sit in the middle of the line, and some drop a tail below it.
When a child is ready
Teach a small letter alongside or just after its capital, once the capital is recognized.
If they struggle
Height is what trips children up. Sort the small letters into three piles — tall (b, d, h, k, l), short (a, c, e, o, s), and tailed (g, p, q, y) — and write each pile on lined paper so the size is the whole point of the exercise.
