Teaching Word Games & Puzzles
What it is
Three games bring back the spellings of the weeks before, so earlier patterns are not forgotten: a roll-and-read board, a code to crack in which each shape stands for a sound, and a small word hunt. They take turns through the year, one every second week.
When a child is ready
Use them after the pattern has been taught and its words read once through; a game is practice, not the first meeting with a spelling.
If they struggle
When a game stalls, the pattern underneath is usually not secure yet; go back and read its plain word list first. In the code game, have the child say each sound aloud while writing its letter, then blend the whole word before moving on.
