Teaching Word Games & Puzzles

What it is

Two puzzles practice the week's word parts. In the code game each shape stands for a base word or an ending (low, short, -est), and the child joins the parts to write and read the word. In the crossword the child reads a clue, chooses the answer from a word bank, and has to spell it exactly for it to fit.

When a child is ready

Use them after the week's word parts have been taught; the puzzles are practice, not the first meeting.

If they struggle

If the code words come out wrong, have the child say what each part means before joining them. In the crossword, count the squares first and set aside the word-bank words that are too long or too short; a letter already in the grid then settles the rest.
