Teaching Word Games & Puzzles

What it is

Two puzzles practice word parts: the week's own in most weeks, and in a few weeks parts the child already knows. In the code game each shape stands for a part (a root, a prefix or a suffix), and the child joins the parts to write and read the word. In the crossword the child reads a clue, chooses the answer from a word bank, and has to spell it exactly for it to fit.

When a child is ready

Use them after the week's root or affix has been taught; the puzzles are practice, not the first meeting.

If they struggle

If the code words come out wrong, have the child say what each part means before joining them. In the crossword, the clue is usually the meaning of the root in plain words; underline that word in the clue and look for the root that carries it.
