Teaching Word Games & Puzzles
What it is
Two puzzles practice word parts: the week's own in most weeks, and in a few weeks parts the child already knows. In the code game each shape stands for a part (a Latin or Greek root, a prefix or a suffix), and the child joins the parts to write and read the word. In the crossword the child reads a clue, chooses the answer from a word bank, and has to spell it exactly for it to fit.
When a child is ready
Use them after the week's root or suffix has been taught; the puzzles are practice, not the first meeting.
If they struggle
If a clue does not lead anywhere, have the child list the week's words and say each meaning aloud; the clue restates one of them. Spelling errors show up when a crossing word will not fit, which makes the puzzle its own check.
