Teaching Word Games & Puzzles
What it is
This is the week's reading pattern practiced as puzzles instead of a worksheet: a word search, a sentence scramble, and Read and Draw at every grade, plus Roll and Read, Crack the Code (a number stands for each letter) and word ladders in the younger grades, and Match Up in the older ones. In kindergarten and first grade the pattern is a sound, such as short a; by third grade it is usually a word part, such as endings that change a word's job.
When a child is ready
Use these after the pattern has been taught and its word list read once through; the puzzles are practice, not the first meeting with it.
If they struggle
When a puzzle stalls, the pattern underneath is usually not secure yet — go back and read its plain word list straight down first. Word ladders are the hardest of the younger formats: have the child say the old word, say the change aloud, then say the new word before writing anything. On Match Up pages, have the child cover the ending and read the base word first (slipping is slip + ing).
