Teaching Uppercase Letters
What it is
Capital letters are built from straight lines and simple curves, which is why they are usually the first letters a child writes by hand. One capital is met at a time: colored as a large hollow letter, said by name and sound with a keyword picture, and traced along one row. Later the child hunts for capitals among other letters and finds the capital that goes with a small letter.
When a child is ready
Start when the child can follow a dotted line and a dotted circle without lifting the pencil at every turn.
If they struggle
If strokes run upward or start in odd places, write the letter yourself on the top line and have the child copy underneath instead of tracing over dots. Every capital begins at the top: say 'start at the top' each time until the hand does it without the reminder.
