Teaching Word Families & Spelling
What it is
These are kindergarten spelling lists — ten words to look at, write correctly on the line, and then use in a sentence. Each list holds words that belong together (God, love, pray, joy, kind, give on one; sun, moon, star, tree, bird, rain on another) rather than words picked at random.
When a child is ready
Begin when the child can write letters from memory and can hear the separate sounds inside a short word.
If they struggle
Ten words at once is too many at this age. Take three a day: say the word, stretch its sounds, write it, then check it letter by letter against the printed word. Words like give and love cannot be sounded out to the end, so mark those and learn them as whole shapes.
