What 4th Grade math practice concentrates on
Decimals are the new work. Adding Decimals (44 sheets), Subtracting Decimals (32), Comparing and Ordering Decimals (20) and Converting Decimals and Fractions (44) make a substantial block, and the converting set matters most. A child who sees that 0.25 and one quarter are the same number stops treating decimals as a separate subject.
On the operations side, Multi-Digit Multiplication (60 sheets) and Multiplying Whole Numbers (60) carry the year, supported by Factors and Multiples (42) and Properties of Multiplication (15). Order of Operations (24 sheets) should follow those rather than lead them: the rules mean something only once expressions need ordering.
The seasonal sets — Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer for each operation — hold 50 written practice sheets and 50 worked answer keys apiece at this grade's level, and their division pages are the first in the bank to leave remainders. Use them once the method is taught; they are repetitions, not instruction.
Two clusters are thinner than a parent might expect. Numbers & Place Value holds only 108 sheets in four sets, and 56 of those are Roman Numerals — an optional set, so the real place-value work is nearer 52 sheets. Measurement is lighter than in 3rd Grade too, at 103 sheets in eight sets, with Measurement Units (40) doing most of the work.
Geometry is broad rather than deep: 128 sheets across nine sets covering coordinate plane, circles, symmetry, classifying shapes, perimeter and area, capacity and volume, and volume and surface area. Each topic is covered; none is drilled. The first three sheets in each set are free.
How the 4th Grade clusters stack up
- Numbers & Place Value (108 sheets, 4 sets) — Place Value, Comparing and Ordering Numbers, and Rounding and Estimation — a short cluster, because place value is assumed here rather than taught. Roman Numerals (56 sheets) is more than half of it and is optional.
- The Four Operations (1,913 sheets, 26 sets) — Addition and subtraction with regrouping as a warm-up, then Multiplication Facts and Drills, Factors and Multiples, Properties of Multiplication, Multiplying Whole Numbers and Multi-Digit Multiplication. Long Division and Order of Operations close it. The sixteen seasonal sets, division with remainders included, supply the steady written practice.
- Fractions & Decimals (311 sheets, 11 sets) — Fractions and Equivalent and Simplified Fractions first, then comparing, Adding Fractions, Subtracting Fractions (44 sheets) and Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions (48). Decimals follow, ending with Converting Decimals and Fractions.
- Measurement, Money & Time (103 sheets, 8 sets) — Measurement and Measurement Units, then Length, Estimating Measurements and Measurement Activities, then the small Measurement Word Problems and Money Word Problems sets. Converting Units depends on multiplication, so hold it until then.
- Geometry & Data (128 sheets, 9 sets) — Geometry and Classifying Shapes, Symmetry and Transformations, and Circles, then Perimeter and Area, Capacity and Volume, and Volume and Surface Area, which need multiplication. Coordinate Plane and Data run anytime.
- Word Problems & Reasoning (27 sheets, 2 sets) — Logic (20 sheets) and Word Problems (7). Best saved until multiplication and fractions are fluent, since a word problem tests reading and arithmetic at once.
- Practice, Fluency & Labs (400 sheets, 3 sets) — Core Skills, Reasoning & Fluency and Interactive & Puzzles. The mastery and multi-step pages here are the closest thing in the grade to a mixed test, so keep some back for the end of a unit.
Common questions
- Should decimals come before or after fractions?
- After. The decimal sets assume fraction language: Converting Decimals and Fractions (44 sheets) only works if a child already reads a quarter and a tenth as fractions. Work Fractions and Equivalent and Simplified Fractions first, then move across, using the converting set as the bridge rather than the finish line.
- My child knows the times tables but stalls on multi-digit multiplication. What now?
- That is usually a place-value problem rather than a facts problem. Multi-Digit Multiplication holds 60 sheets and Multiplying Whole Numbers another 60, so there is room to go slowly. Pair them with the Place Value set so the child can say what each partial product is worth before writing it.
