Teaching Comparing and Ordering Numbers

What it is

Comparing numbers up to a million with greater than, less than or equal, and putting four-digit numbers in order from least to greatest.

When a child is ready

Ready once place value through the thousands is secure and long numerals are read without losing track of the digits.

If they struggle

Write the pair one above the other with the ones digits lined up. A number with more digits is larger; otherwise compare from the left, place by place, and stop at the first place where the digits differ.

This skill in other grades: Kindergarten · Grade 1 · Grade 2 · Grade 3 · Grade 5
