Teaching Comparing Numbers
What it is
Comparing numbers means deciding which of two numbers is greater or less and using the symbols >, <, and =.
When a child is ready
A child is ready once numbers are understood by place value, not just by counting order.
If they struggle
Compare the biggest place first: tens before ones. If the symbols are confusing, describe the open side as facing the bigger number, and have the child say the sentence out loud ('42 is greater than 27').
