What it is
This compares two groups before numbers do the work: which plate holds more crackers, which holds fewer, or whether the two hold the same. The child matches one item to one item instead of counting.
When a child is ready
Ready once a small group is counted accurately, since some pages go on to ask how many more one group has.
If they struggle
Children often pick the group that takes up more space rather than the group with more things. Line the two groups up side by side, one item directly across from another; whichever row has leftovers has more, and if nothing is left over the groups are the same.
