Teaching Counting Scattered Sets

What it is

Counting objects that are scattered across a page instead of lined up, so the child must keep track of which ones have already been counted.

When a child is ready

Ready once a row of objects is counted accurately every time.

If they struggle

Give the child a way to mark what is done: cross each one off, or move it if the objects are real. On paper, work in one steady direction, left to right and top to bottom, and count out loud so a lost place can be heard and picked up again.
