Teaching Compare Numbers

What it is

Comparing decimals to thousandths with greater than, less than or equal, and putting decimals in order from least to greatest.

When a child is ready

Begin once the decimal places can be named and the child can write 0.4 and 0.40 as the same amount.

If they struggle

The usual error is treating the longer decimal as the larger one. Have the child rewrite both with the same number of decimal places before comparing anything.
