Counting is three separate jobs learned together: saying the number words in order, touching each object exactly once, and knowing that the last word you said tells how many. A child can do the first two and still not have the third. Teach all three with real objects before any worksheet, about ten minutes a day.
The three jobs hiding inside "counting to ten"
The number-word sequence is memory work, and most children pick it up from songs long before it means anything. One-to-one matching is physical: one word for one object, nothing skipped and nothing touched twice. Knowing how many is the third job. Ask a child who has just counted seven beans how many there are, and if he starts over at one, the words and the touching are in place but the meaning is not.
Two more pieces belong here. Recognizing a small amount at a glance, such as three dots on a die, frees a child from starting at one forever. Comparing two piles and saying which has more, before either is counted, is where arithmetic begins. Writing numerals comes last, because the shape of a 5 means nothing until five is a real amount to him.
A ten-minute counting routine
Attach it to something that already happens at the same time each day, at a table, with the same container of objects. Ten minutes is plenty at this age, and a longer session usually costs you attention rather than buying it. One sitting covers all three jobs in order and ends with the numeral writing, so the hardest fine-motor work comes after the child has already succeeded at something.
- Two minutes: count a line of objects together, out loud, moving each one into a cup as you say its number.
- Three minutes: count a new set, then ask "How many are there?" without letting him recount. Cover them and ask again.
- Two minutes: put out two piles and ask which has more. Let him decide before counting, then check by matching one to one.
- Two minutes: you say a number, he builds it. Say another, he builds that one.
- One minute: he writes the numeral for the last set he built.
Use what is already in the kitchen
Dried beans, buttons, pennies, pasta shells, clothespins, and an egg carton will carry a child from one to twenty. The egg carton is the most useful thing you own: twelve cups force one-to-one matching, and snapping two cups off leaves a ten-frame you will use for years. Stairs give counting a rhythm. Socks from the laundry basket give pairs. Printed sheets consolidate what a child has already done with his hands; they do not introduce it.
What it looks like when it is working, and when it is not
Working looks like a steady point-and-say with no rush, an unhesitating answer to how many, and a willingness to start counting at six rather than at one. It sounds calm. A child who is guessing usually counts fast and loud, because speed hides the fact that the objects and the words have come apart from each other.
- He recites to 100 but cannot count out eight buttons accurately.
- His finger touches two objects on one word, or the same object twice.
- Asked how many straight after counting, he counts again from one.
- He can count things in a neat row but not the same things scattered.
- He writes numerals confidently but cannot show you that amount in objects.
When your child is stuck
Cut the set down. If eight is falling apart, work with four, then five, and do not go back up until the small sets are automatic. Make the counting physical, so each object leaves the pile and drops into a cup as it is counted and a counted thing cannot be counted twice. Then count the same five objects arranged three ways, in a row, in a circle, and scattered, so he learns that the amount does not change when the arrangement does.
What a normal pace looks like
Counting a set of ten accurately, with meaning, usually takes several months of short daily sessions in preschool or kindergarten. Counting, reading, and writing to 100, along with comparing, is generally the work of a full kindergarten year. Children who start later often cover the same ground much faster. Common questions
- My child can count to 100 but cannot count eight objects. What is wrong?
- Nothing unusual. Counting to 100 is a memorized song; counting eight objects is a coordination task, and he has the words without the matching. Stop practicing the sequence for a while and work only with sets of four to eight objects that he moves one at a time into a cup. When eight is reliable in any arrangement, the higher numbers come back quickly, because the words were never the problem.
- What should a five-year-old be able to count to?
- Ranges are wide and both ends are normal. A useful marker at five, rather than a rule, is counting a scattered set of ten accurately, answering how many without recounting, and recognizing written numerals to ten. Rote counting often runs to thirty or beyond by then, but the rote number is the less useful measure. If he can chant to fifty and cannot count six crackers, work on the six crackers.
- Should my child write numerals before or after learning to count?
- After, or alongside, but never before. Writing a 4 is a handwriting skill and knowing four is a mathematical one, and a child can have the first without the second. Once he can build and count a quantity, have him write the numeral for it in the same sitting, so the shape stays attached to the amount. Trace in sand or salt with a finger first if the pencil is still hard work.
- Are reversed numbers a problem?
- Reversed 3s, 5s, 7s, and 9s are common through kindergarten and into first grade and are not on their own a sign of a learning difficulty. Correct them at the moment they happen rather than after the page is finished, and keep a model in front of him to copy. Judge the math by whether the amount is understood. If reversals are still frequent by the end of second grade, have someone look more closely.
