Money and time are number sense worn into everyday shapes. Coins are worth their value rather than their count, so five coins can be five cents or a dollar and a quarter. A clock carries two hands moving at different speeds across one face. Both need deliberate teaching, because neither one is obvious from looking at it.

Two counting systems on one face, and coins that are not worth one

Every piece of counting a child has done until now gave each object a value of one. Coins break that. A dime is smaller than a nickel and worth twice as much, and the only way through is to count by value: start with the largest coin and keep a running total out loud. Twenty-five, thirty-five, forty, forty-five, fifty.

The clock breaks it a second way. The short hand counts hours by pointing between numbers, while the long hand counts minutes by five for every number it passes. A child reading 4:40 as 8:20 has not made a careless error. They have read the wrong hand using the right method, which is a teaching problem rather than an attention problem.

The clock job and the coin jar

Both skills reward small daily contact far more than a long lesson. Give your child a standing job with the clock and a standing job with the coins, and let the practice happen inside the day rather than at the table, in the real moments when somebody needs to know the time or pay for something.

  1. Hang an analog clock where your child eats, and give them the job: tell me when it is 4:15.
  2. For the first week, cover the minute hand with a sticky note. Hour only, and answers like it is a little after three are correct.
  3. Uncover the minute hand and count around the face by fives together, touching each number: five, ten, fifteen.
  4. Empty a coin jar once a week. Sort by type, count each pile with its own skip count, write the subtotal, then combine largest first.
  5. At the store, hand your child the money and let them work out whether it is enough before you reach the register.

Use real coins, not plastic ones

Plastic coins all weigh the same, and a good deal of what a child learns about money is learned in the hand: the ridged edge of a quarter, the small heavy dime, the thick nickel. A dollar in mixed change spread across the table is a better manipulative than anything you can print for the purpose. Add one analog clock and a strip of paper for a number line and this skill has everything it needs.

Money is also where the character of the arithmetic shows. He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much (Luke 16:10, NKJV). Counting change carefully, handing back the extra dime a cashier gave by mistake, keeping a record of what was spent: that is arithmetic and it is training at the same time.

Elapsed time without a formula

Elapsed time defeats children who try to subtract, because clocks are not base ten. Use a number line instead. Write the start time on the left and the end time on the right, then jump in friendly steps: from 2:40, jump twenty minutes to 3:00, then fifteen more to 3:15. Thirty-five minutes, counted rather than computed.

Say the jumps out loud and let your child choose them. The jump to the next whole hour is almost always the useful first move, and children discover that for themselves within a few days. The method survives into much harder problems later, which is why it is worth teaching properly instead of reaching for an algorithm that fails across the hour.

Each error here has its own particular fix

Watch for these five: counting five coins and saying five cents, starting a mixed pile with the pennies, reading the hour hand as minutes, needing to draw a clock for every elapsed question past half an hour, and still telling time only to the hour in third grade. Not one of them is answered by a larger stack of worksheets.

For coins, sort and count one type at a time until each pile runs by itself, then combine. For clocks, cover the minute hand and live with the hour hand alone for a week. Coin names belong in kindergarten, mixed coins in second grade, clock reading to the minute across second and third, elapsed time in third and fourth. Because digital displays are everywhere now, the analog face needs months of daily contact rather than a single unit.

Common questions

My eight-year-old still cannot read an analog clock. Is that normal?
It shows up often, and it is a practice problem rather than a learning problem. Nearly every clock a child sees now is digital, so the analog face never gets the hundreds of casual readings that used to teach it. Put one analog clock where your child eats, cover the minute hand for a week so the hour hand is learned alone, then uncover it and count around the face by fives. Expect weeks of daily contact, not one lesson.
How do I teach counting mixed coins?
Largest value first, with the running total said out loud after every coin. Sort the pile into quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies before counting anything, because switching skip counts mid-stream causes most of the errors. Count each pile in its own rhythm, write down the subtotal, then add the subtotals. Once that is smooth, count a mixed pile straight through, still largest first and still out loud.
How do I teach elapsed time?
Draw an empty number line and jump along it rather than subtracting. Mark the start time on the left and the end on the right, jump to the next whole hour first, then in tens or fives to the end, and add the jumps together. From 1:50 to 2:30 that is ten minutes plus thirty, so forty. This holds up when the times cross an hour or midday, which is where subtracting quietly falls apart.
Do children still need to learn analog clocks?
Yes, and not mainly because of clocks. The analog face is where a child first meets a scale that counts by fives, an instrument carrying two readings at once, and a circle divided into equal parts. That is measurement, skip counting and fractions in one object, and children who read a clock face well tend to read graph scales and rulers well. It also costs very little time once it is somebody's daily job.
