Teaching Elapsed Time
What it is
Elapsed time is how much time passes between a start and an end. Leaving at 2:15 and arriving at 3:00 is 45 minutes. Early sheets stay in whole hours; later ones cross the hour and count minutes.
When a child is ready
Begin once time is told to five minutes and the child can count on by fives.
If they struggle
Draw an empty number line, mark the start, jump to the next whole hour, then jump to the end, and add the two jumps. Counting forward this way avoids the borrowing errors that come from stacking two clock times in a subtraction column, where an hour gets borrowed as 100 minutes instead of 60.
