Teaching Measurement Units

What it is

This is choosing the sensible unit for a job: inches for a pencil, feet for a room, miles for a journey, ounces for a letter, pounds for a bag of flour. Metric units are matched the same way.

When a child is ready

Begin once real objects have been measured with a ruler and a scale and the child knows what an inch and a pound feel like.

If they struggle

When miles is picked for a pencil, ask how many of that unit the object would be; an answer near zero, or one that runs into the thousands, shows the unit is wrong before any measuring happens. Keep a short reference list beside the work with one familiar object for each unit, and add to it as new objects are measured.
