Teaching Place Value

What it is

Decimals to thousandths written into a place-value chart and in expanded form, decimals to round to the nearest whole, tenth and hundredth, and decimals multiplied by 10, 100 and 1,000.

When a child is ready

Ready once tenths and hundredths are understood and whole numbers are rounded to any place.

If they struggle

The decimal point does not move; the digits do. Multiplying by 10 shifts each digit one place to the left, so 10.8 becomes 108.

This skill in other grades: Kindergarten · Grade 1 · Grade 2 · Grade 3 · Grade 4
