Teaching Place Value
What it is
Place value is the idea that a digit's position sets its value: in 342, the 3 means three hundreds, the 4 means four tens, and the 2 means two ones.
When a child is ready
Introduce tens and ones once the child counts past 20 and can group objects by ten.
If they struggle
Build numbers with bundles of ten and single sticks, then write what was built. Say numbers both ways ('four tens and two ones' and 'forty-two') until both are natural.
