What kindergarten math practice covers, and the order to teach it in

Most sets are a sequence of activity formats rather than one page repeated. Addition as Joining (174 sheets) moves through Discover, Model, Strategy, Fluency, Connect, Apply, Prove and Spiral pages. Smaller sets such as Part-Part-Whole and Ten Frame Relationships use Build, Explain and Explore pages, and a few — Place Value, Color by Number, Ordering Numerals — are a plain Practice page.

Depth is the point of this grade. Counting 8 to 10 runs to 180 sheets; Numeral Formation and Teen Number Place Value hold 80 each. That is more than any one child needs, deliberately. Take the pages that fit the day and leave the rest.

Two clusters do most of the year's work. Numbers & Place Value holds 2,160 sheets in 19 sets, and The Four Operations 2,828 in 23 — eight of those are the seasonal sets, 100 pages each of written single-digit practice with a worked answer key for every sheet. The operations sets do not open with sums: Compose and Decompose to 5, Ways to Make 5, Part-Part-Whole and Ten Frame Relationships all teach that a number is built from parts, and Addition as Joining and Subtraction as Separating follow from that.

One cluster is not a stage at all. The 400 sheets in Practice, Fluency & Labs are Core Skills, Reasoning & Fluency, and Interactive & Puzzles — count-the-scene pages, dot-to-dot, matching, mazes, mystery pictures, number-of-the-day, roll-and-cover and spin-and-solve. The first three sheets in every set are open to everyone.

The order to work the kindergarten clusters

1. Sorting, Patterns & Logic (348 sheets, 6 sets) — Same and Different, Matching and Classifying, Shapes and Patterns, Logic and Reasoning, Logic and Patterns, Mazes. No number knowledge needed; this builds the sorting habit counting rests on.
2. Numbers & Place Value (2,160 sheets, 19 sets) — The spine of the year. Counting and numerals in small steps, 1 to 3 up through 16 to 20, then Building Teen Numbers, comparing, ordering and Teen Number Place Value. Numeral Formation sits here too, for the children still learning to write the digits.
3. The Four Operations (2,828 sheets, 23 sets) — Joining and separating, once counting to ten is secure. Compose and Decompose to 5, Ways to Make 5 and Ways to Make 6 to 10, Part-Part-Whole and Making 10 come first; Fact Families and Missing Number Equations close it. The eight seasonal sets — Fall through Summer Addition and Subtraction — give written practice on the same facts once the composing work is secure.
4. Measurement, Money & Time (420 sheets, 6 sets) — Measurement Comparison, Clocks and Daily Time, Time and Sequence, Money and Measurement. Needs the comparison language — more, fewer, the same — but not addition.
5. Geometry & Data (420 sheets, 6 sets) — Geometry and Shapes and Shape Composition, then Picture Graphs and Data and Graphing. Graph work is counting in disguise, so keep it until numbers to ten are steady.
6. Word Problems & Reasoning (340 sheets, 4 sets) — Comparison Word Problems, Mixed Review and Mastery, End-of-Year Review and Logic. These lean on counting and on the joining and separating work, so they sit near the end.
7. Practice, Fluency & Labs (400 sheets, 3 sets) — Not a stage. Core Skills, Reasoning & Fluency and Interactive & Puzzles run alongside everything above, from the first week to the last.
