Teaching Addition as Joining
What it is
Eight addition problems with sums to 10. Each answer stands for a letter in a code key, so finishing the sums spells a short secret message, and a story problem closes the page.
When a child is ready
Start once the child counts on from the larger number without recounting both groups.
If they struggle
A letter that looks wrong in the message points to the sum that went wrong. Redo only that one, counting on from the larger number.
