Teaching Addition with Regrouping
What it is
Addition with regrouping (carrying) is column addition where a column adds to ten or more, so ten ones become one ten: 27 + 15 = 42.
When a child is ready
The child should know addition facts and understand that ten ones make one ten before regrouping is introduced.
If they struggle
Use base-ten blocks or drawings first: add the ones, trade ten ones for a ten rod, then add the tens. Write the small carried 1 only after the trade makes sense physically.
