Teaching Addition Facts

What it is

Eight addition problems with sums to 20. The answers decode a secret message, and a story problem closes the page.

When a child is ready

Ready once the pairs that make 10 are known.

If they struggle

When a sum passes ten, make a ten first: for 8 + 9, give 2 to the 8 and add the 7 that is left. A wrong letter in the message shows which sum to redo.

This skill in other grades: Kindergarten · Grade 2 · Grade 3 · Grade 4 · Grade 5
