Teaching Making 10
What it is
Making ten is knowing the partner that fills a ten frame: 6 needs 4, 7 needs 3, 8 needs 2. It later becomes the strategy behind 8 + 5, where 2 moves across to make 10 + 3.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child counts to ten and can see a small amount on a ten frame without counting every square.
If they struggle
Fill a ten frame with counters and ask how many squares are still empty, daily, in random order. Counting the empty squares one by one is fine at first; the pairs are learned by repetition, not by explanation.
