Teaching Patterns and Rules

What it is

Counting patterns to continue forward, backward and by tens, a function machine that adds one, a row with one number that does not fit, and a pattern of the child's own.

When a child is ready

Start once the child counts forward and backward within 20 and counts by tens.

If they struggle

Ask what happens from one number to the next and say it aloud: one more, one less, ten more. That sentence is the rule.
